Escherichia coli (E. coli) with multiple polar flagella and fimbriae. The rod-shaped bacterium is a normal part of human and animal microbiota. It is enteric, meaning it is found in the intestines. When E. coli gets out of the digestive tract that it causes urinary tract infections, traveler's diarrhea and nosocomial infections. Hemorrhagic E. coli (O157:H7) is a different strain of E.coli that causes serious intestinal illness in humans. E. Coli is killed when meats are cooked thoroughly.
