This image shows an area around Palm Valley, in central Australia. The oval-shaped region of blue patches just below the center of the image is Palm Valley. Palm Valley, which is located in the Northwest Territory of Australia about 138 km (85 mi) southwest of Alice Springs, contains important reserves of natural gas and is a popular tourist destination. The curving bands are outcrops of sedimentary rock that have been folded and shaped by processes of mountain building. The dark brown and blue region to the right of the center of the image is covered with loose gravel sediments and grasses. The image was obtained by SIR-C/X-SAR on the Space Shuttle Endeavour on April 13, 1994 and shows an area about 60 km (37 mi) on a side.
