This image shows a desert area of the north central plain of Oman. The white hill on the left edge of the image is called Jabal Fuhud and is located just south of the town Fuhud, which is visible in the image as a series of small, bright, rectangular patches just above the hill. The larger, “U-shaped” white hill at the right of the center of the image is called Jabal Natih. Layers in the limestone that make up the hills are visible as stripes that run parallel to the crests of the hills. The network of branching red features that cover the image are ancient drainage channels that were formed when the climate was wetter than it is now. The image was obtained by SIR-C/X-SAR on the Space Shuttle Endeavour on April 10, 1994 and shows an area about 42 km (26 mi) on a side.
