A fossilized Crinoid head (Pentremitidea goldringae) photographed through an optical scanning microscope. This type of fossil is from the middle Devonian period (about 450 million years ago), and was collected in the Genesee Valley Region of New York State. Crinoids are echinoderms, which are characterized by five-part radially symmetrical bodies.
