NGC 6888 is an arc shaped nebula in the summer sky. The nebula forms a background for several spectacular foreground stars seen in the image. Centrally within the Crescent is a massive Wolf-Rayet star which started shedding its outer envelope 250,000 years ago. The envelope and preexisting material together form the complex shell we call the Crescent Nebula. NGC 6888 lies in a much larger background of emission nebulosity 4700 light years away in the constellation Cygnus.
