A leaf aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum). The proboscis of the aphid is penetrating a vein in the leaf. This insect transmits alfalfa mosaic virus (rhabdovirus) and pea enation mosaic (isometric) virus. Aphids suck plant juices and in turn produce a sticky, sweet waste product called honeydew. Some species of aphids and ants have symbiotic relationships where ants protect and move aphids from plant to plant in exchange for a constant source of food-the honeydew.
