The Candida yeast (Candida parapsilosis). Candida species are part of the normal flora of mucous membranes of the mouth, gut and vagina. They are opportunistic fungi that may grow unchecked and become invasive if the host is immune deficient. Steroid therapy, malnutrition, diabetes and antibiotic suppression of the normal bacterial flora are predisposing factors. Candida parapsilosis is a non-albicans species that infects hospitalized patients. Biofilm production by the yeast plays an important role in C. parapsilosis outbreaks.
