The Hubble Ultra Deep Field is the deepest view of the Universe ever obtained of a small portion of the Southern Hemisphere sky. This visible-wavelength image was obtained over a period of stretching September, 2003 through January, 2004. The primary utility of the image is to detect and identify extremely distant galaxies. Because light travels at a fixed and finite speed, distant galaxies are seen as they were in the distant past, hence the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image provides a look back in time toward the early history of the Universe. The image identifies more than 10,000 galaxies, the most distant of which are seen as they were when the Universe was less than 5% of its current age, or within about 750 million years of the Big Bang.
