The Horsehead Nebula is a cold, dark cloud of gas and dust, that is silhouetted against the bright nebula IC 434. Located toward the constellation Orion, the Horsehead Nebula is one of the most famous gaseous nebula in the sky. The bright area at the top left of the image is a young star that is still embedded in the gas and dust from which it formed. Radiation from this hot star is slowly eroding the gas and dust. The top of the nebula is also structured by radiation from a massive star that is located out the field of view of the image.
