| Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, named after the Roman god of war. The image was obtained during the largest global dust storm on Mars in several decades. The dust storm raised a cloud of dust high into the atmosphere for more than three months, raising the temperature of the Martian atmosphere while lowering the temperature of the Martian surface. By combining observations obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope with observations obtained using the Mars Global Surveyor, scientists were given a detailed look at how storms form and develop on the red planet. |
