The Lagoon Nebula is a glowing cloud of Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and other elements some 5000 light years away toward the constellation Sagittarius. The nebula is powered by the bright, hot star in the upper left corner of the image and by other hot stars scattered throughout the image. Ultraviolet light from the stars causes the gas to glow through a process known as fluorescence. Vast quantities of dust mixed in with the gas block and obscure the light, producing the dark brown and black regions visible in the image. The Lagoon nebula is about 60 light years across.
