Earth from Space 2001 Calendar

This image shows the area of Death Valley, California. In this image, rough surface areas show up as bright and smooth surface areas show up as dark. The darker region toward the upper left of the image are the smooth basins and valleys of Death Valley, while the brighter regions toward the right and the left of the image are the surrounding mountains. The image shows several alluvial fansgravel deposits that wash down the sides of mountains over timealong the mountain fronts. The image also shows the sand dunes near Stove Pipe Wells toward the bottom. Elevations in the Death Valley area range from 70 m (230 ft) below sea level through 3300 m (10,800 ft) above sea level.
