 |
| This image shows an area of central Java, Indonesia.
The summits of two volcanoes are visible in the image: Mt. Merbabu
(just above the center of the image), and Mt. Merapi (to the
right of the center of the image). Mt. Merapi has erupted 68
times since 1548, most recently on November 28, 1994, just over
six weeks after the image was obtained. It is located about 70
km (45 mi) north of Yogyakarta, which is a city with a population
of 500,000. In this image, regions of green and yellow indicate
lava flows of varying ages and surface roughnesses. The image
was obtained by SIR-C/X-SAR on the Space Shuttle Endeavour on
October 10, 1994 and shows an area about 33 km (20 mi) on a side. |
