Universe of the Hubble Space Telescope
2000 Calendar
 |
| The Hubble Deep Field South is the deepest view
of the Universe ever obtained of a small portion of the Southern
Hemisphere sky. The image was obtained over a period of ten consecutive
days in September and October of 1998. The primary utility of
the image is to detect and identify extremely distant galaxies.
Because light travels at a fixed and finite speed, distant galaxies
are seen as they were in the distant past, hence the Hubble Deep
Field South image provides a look back in time toward the early
history of the Universe. The most distant galaxies in the image
are seen as they were when the Universe was less than 5% of its
current age, or within about 750 million years of the Big Bang. |
