Earth from Space 2000 Calendar

The Sakuar-jima Volcano is an active volcano located on the island of Kyushu, Japan. The volcano has been in near continuous eruption since 1955 and is believed to pose a threat to the nearby city of Kagoshima, which is located across a narrow strait from the center of the volcano and is visible below and to the left of the central peninsula. The volcano occupies the peninsula in the center of the Kagoshima bay, which was formed by the explosion and collapse of an ancient predecessor of the current volcano. The image was obtained by SIR-C/X-SAR on the Space Shuttle Endeavor on October 9, 1994 and shows an area about 13 mi (21 km) on a side.
