Earth from Space 2000 Calendar

The Ruiz Volcano is an active volcano located in central Colombia, about 93 mi (150 km) due west of Bogata. The volcano last erupted in 1985, triggering mud slides that killed 21,000 people in the nearby town of Armero. Ruiz Volcano is the dark red peak below and to the right of the image center, Tolima Volcano is the sharp peak near the lower left corner of the image, and the town of Manizales is the pink area near the upper right corner of the image. A circular crater is visible at the summit of the Ruiz Volcano. The summit of the volcano is 17,681 ft (5381 m) above sea level. The image was obtained by SIR-C/X-SAR on the Space Shuttle Endeavor on April 14, 1994 and shows an area about 25 mi (40 km) on a side, with North toward the upper right.
