Earth from Space 2000 Calendar
 |
| This image is centered on a portion of the Andes
Mountains in northern Ecuador. The volcanoes at the top of the
image are (clockwise from the upper left) Majanda, Imabura, and
Cusin, and the volcano at the bottom of the image is Cayambe.
The city of Otavalo and Lake Otavalo are located between the
three volcanoes in the upper part of the image. A lake partially
fills the summit crater of Mojanda, and a group of lava domes
is visible on the north flank. Mojanda last erupted about 3400
years ago, and Cayambe last erupted about 600 years ago. The
image was obtained by SIR-C/X-SAR on the Space Shuttle Endeavor
on April 14, 1994 and shows an area about 31 mi (50 km) on a
side, with North toward the upper right. |
