Earth from Space 2000 Calendar
 |
| This image is centered on a mountainous region
of southeast Tibet, about 56 mi (90 km) due east of the city
of Lhasa. A wide valley of the Lhasa River appears in the lower
right corner of the image. The mountain summits are roughly 19,000
ft (5800 m) above sea level, and the valley floors are roughly
14,000 ft (4300 m) above sea level. In this image, orange represents
granite rocks, and blue represents older sedimentary and volcanic
rocks. The Lhasa River is part of the Brahmaputra River system,
which is one of the largest rivers in southeast Asia. The image
was obtained by SIR-C/X-SAR on the Space Shuttle Endeavor on
April 10, 1994 and shows an area about 21 mi (34 km) on a side,
with North toward the upper left. |
