| The Galeras Volcano is an active volcano located
in the southwest Colombian Andes near the border of Ecuador.
The volcano has erupted more than 20 times since it was first
visited by European explorers in the 16th century. The most recent
eruption of the volcano occurred in 1993, when nine people on
an expedition to the summit were killed. The city of Pasto, Colombia,
which has a population of 300,000, appears in orange at the lower
right. The summit of the volcano is 13,997 ft (4269 m) above
sea level. This image was obtained by SIR-C/X-SAR on the Space
Shuttle Endeavor on April 15, 1994 and shows an area about 22
mi (36 km) on a side, with North toward the upper right. |
